According to Thai media reports, Ekanit Panya has requested to withdraw from the “War Elephants” squad participating in the 2023 Asian Cup. He aims to join his host club, Urawa Red Diamonds, to prepare for the upcoming season. In response, Thailand’s head coach, Masatada Ishii, had to call midfielder Picha Autra as a replacement.
Siam Sport disclosed that Ekanit desires optimal preparation for the new season in Japanese football, especially after Urawa Red Diamonds appointed a new coach, Per-Mathias Hogmo.
On January 7, the Thai national team initiated its training for the 2023 Asian Cup finals. The first session, lasting around 1 hour and 30 minutes, involved 17 players. The squad is expected to reach its full complement of 26 players by January 8.
Commenting on the team’s preparations, Coach Masatada Ishii stated, “The unfortunate absence of Chanathip Songkrasin and Teerasil Dangda due to injury opens opportunities for other players. We are gearing up for a practice match against U23 Thailand, providing an opportunity for players to assess their physical fitness and apply the team’s tactical strategies.”
Coach Ishii expressed the team’s ambition for the 2023 Asian Cup, aiming to progress beyond the group stage and make a significant impact in the tournament.
